This course is designed to introduce students to the history of the United States from pre-Columbian times to the Civil War. A wide range of topics will be discussed including, exploration and the exchange of ideas, social and cultural changes, and political philosophies. While we will study important figures in early American history, we will also focus on populations such as laborers and farmers, African Americans, Native Americans, and women. This course will emphasize moments of transition and continuity.
